I am Marishka Phillips of the Marishka Phillips Preparatory. I was inspired to teach by many back women, first it was by my mother. God has anointed me to teach. My purpose is to usher the actor into their greatness, giving themselves full permission. I love having my home base in New York, my dream is to sow seeds around the world! I am a large-hearted, inspiring, generous and healing acting coach, actor, teacher and director.

How do you describe your coaching
I take a very spiritual approach to the craft. Meaning as I stand in front of each actor, I connect with their spirit as I ask them a simple question. “What are you aware of?” From there I am able to tap into the actor’s spirit and share.

How did you get in to coaching
The moment I knew I wanted to teach was about 1 1/2 year after I started studying with my then mentor Susan Batson. After class, she was gracious enough to let me get in her taxi to drop my off at Penn Station. During that ride something rose up in my spirit and I told her that I would like to teach. Her reply, “I think you’ld make a great teacher. Just keep showing up kiddo”. And I did. That was in 2004. By 2006 I was teaching 3 classes a week at her studio.

Did you study coaching or acting
I studied Ms. Batson to learn. I studied with her from 2002 – 2011

Do you operate on instincts when you are coaching or acting
When I am teaching or coaching my instincts truly take over. When the actor hits their truth I get chills running up and down my arms. When it cuts really deep in hits my legs!! I believe it’s the Holy Spirit!

Describe a few wrong impressions actors hold about acting
Many new actors are not aware of the hard work it takes to be a successful actor. Some think they have to show up looking good with their lines memorized. That is just plain wrong. If you don’t do tons of research and character development, you will not serve the character.

How often do actor have to take acting courses to improve their craft
It is my belief that an actor should always keep their instrument sharp. As Malcolm Gladwell says’ “It take 10,000 hours to master a craft”. And even then, you should stay sharp. The type of class should suit your needs. Know thyself.

How do you keep in shape as a coach
I am constantly reading, watching movies, breaking down scripts to keep in shape as an acting coach. I do private coaching sessions in person and via Skype as well as hold monthly workshops.

What physical exercises can help an actor keep in shape
I suggest actors to put on music and dance. This excercise will keep your body, mind and spirit keen. You must listen and let the music influence you.

What advice would you give actors around the world
>The advice I would give amateur actors around the world is to define yourself. Be clear on the characters you will and will not play. Read, research, study, study study! Watch movies. Learn from your favorite actors.

I am also willing to to travel to teach workshops! That is a goal of mine. I am currently an on set coach for a feature film shooting in New York entitled “No Black Girls Please” and teaching my workshops.
