Censor Of Dreams by Léo Berne & Raphaël Rodriguez: The Psychology of Censoring out Bad Dream

Censor Of Dreams is a short film by Léo Berne and Raphaël Rodriguez, recently, it won the Grand Prix at the Oscars® qualifying Warsaw Film Festival 2021. Léo Berne and Raphaël Rodriguez’s live-action-short film focuses on a team of people who try to block their host’s painful dreams and memories.

This dark comedy which was inspired by the book Yume no ken’estukan (the Censor of Dreams) by author Yasutaka Tsutsui, world premiered at the 2021 Warsaw Film Festival where it won the Oscar-qualifying Award.

Synopsis: Night after night The Censor and his team mold Yoko’s memories into fantastical dreams. Tonight nothing happens as planned.  

Co-directors Léo Berne and Raphaël Rodriguez founded Megaforce with each other alongside Clément Gallet and Charles Brisgand. They have directed campaigns and music videos for the likes of Rihanna, Madonna, Kid Cudi among many others.

In 2013, they were nominated for Best Director at the UK Music Video Awards, listed amongst Televisual’s Top 10 Directors between 2015 and 2021, AdAge’s Top Three Directors, and crowned Best Directors in Campaign Magazines’ of 2018. The “Nothing Beats a Londoner” campaign for Nike is the most decorated commercial in 40 years at D&AD. They wrote and directed Burberry’s Festive campaign, which, alongside their Lacoste film Crocodile Inside, garnered the Gold and the Grand Prix respectively at Cannes Lions in 2021.

Censor of Dreams has been produced by Iconoclast, a multidisciplinary production company that launched in Paris and Los Angeles in 2011 and has produced many music videos including Happy by Pharell Williams and Brown Skin Girl by Beyoncé, brand content, feature films, and series. Iconolast’s catalog of films include The Beach Bum by Harmony Korine, Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot by Gus Van Sant, and The World Is Yours by Romain Gavras and they have several projects in production including Romain Gavras third film with Netflix.

Cinematographer Khalid Mohtaseb recently shot the upcoming film National Champions which stars J.K. Simmons. Two of his past feature projects, The Wolf Hour – starring Naomi Watts – and Uncle Frank, both premiered at Sundance.

Censor of Dreams screened at Rome Independent Film Festival and at Chilliwack Film Festival in late November.
