18th Annual Oscar® Qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival selects ‘Divide By Zero’ for 2022 line-up in this year’s exciting sci-fi category

Los Angeles, CA – August 15, 2022. The Oscar® Qualifying HOLLYSHORTS FILM FESTIVAL has returned for its much-anticipated 18th edition. HSFF runs from August 11-20th, 2022, with an impressive 5000+ entries. 161 female directors and 101 BIPOC directors and nearly 400 films form this year’s exciting program.

A strong contender for the 18th edition sci-fi category is DIVIDE BY ZERO, directed by Maarten Bun. Co-Writer/Producer Matt Jaems oversaw the world-building and story integrity. The film boasts an international cast, starring Matthijs Ten Kate (NL), William Sutton (UK), and Hans Dekker (NL). Also Chris King Perryman (US) and Tanya Shpadi (RU).

The short film tells the story of Julian who prepares for his own forthcoming interrogation. He conjures up different personalities in order to stress-test through realistic internal dialogues. Following a series of these conversational events Julian finds his perception of reality challenged. Now, he has to find a path forward without shattering his world around him.

DIVIDE BY ZERO was written by Lawant & Matt Jaems, based on a concept by Maarten Bun & Hans Dekker. It was produced by Matt Jaems, Maarten Bun, and Joas Burggraaf. Also by Hans Dekker, Nicole Steendam, Vincenzo Toscani and Helmut Ramak. All at MONKEYSHOOT STUDIOS. The film’s cinematographer was Joas Burggraaf.

The film performed well at a number of competitions and festivals since completion. Including winning both the global AUDIENCE CHOICE award and the Jury awarding it THIRD BEST FILM. In addition to Director of Photography Joas Burggraaf nabbing the BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY at the FOUR POINTS FILM PROJECT. Being recognized with Award of Excellence and Best Screenplay. Lawant & Matt Jaems received it the ONE REELER short film competition. In total, the film has now garnered 14 laurels around the world with its Official Selection into HollyShorts.

As with previous editions, the winners of HollyShorts’ three top prizes will be eligible for nomination at the 2023 Oscars®. Six HollyShorts films were nominated for the 2021 Academy Awards®. Two wins for Aneil Karia and Riz Ahmed’s THE LONG GOODBYE and Ben Proudfoot’s THE QUEEN OF BASKETBALL.

This year’s hybrid celebration of short films will take place in-person with screenings. At world-renowned TCL Chinese 6 Theaters in Hollywood and virtually through the official festival streaming platform BITPIX.
