Josza Anjembe’s Topical Live Short, ‘French’ Wins 40 High Profile Awards

Director Josza Anjembe and Producer Nelson Ghrenassia’s topical film shares the story of a teenager who is discriminated against because of her race. This live-action short film has received almost 40 prestigious film awards, has been selected for over 170 film festivals and was nominated for the French Oscars (Les César du Cinéma).

Official Synopsis: At seventeen, Seyna, a teenager from Cameroon is passionate about France history, the country where she was born and she is deeply in love. Her diploma in hand, and approaching her majority, Seyna aspires only to one thing: getting French nationality. But her father Amidou is fiercely opposed to it.

Director Josza Anjembe is a French documentary filmmaker and journalist. In 2009 she directed her first documentary Cameroonian massage, which was broadcast on French TV and selected in numerous festivals. French is her first live-action short film.

Producer Nelson Ghrenassia (Yukunkun Productions) graduated from Paris La Sorbonne with a Master’s degree in Film Production. He has produced 18 short films, which were widely broadcast on television and in prestigious festivals including Locarno, Cannes, Palm Springs and Clermont-Ferrand.

Newcomer Grace Seri stars as Seyna, she graduated from the National Drama Academy in Paris and on stage, has worked with many directors including Georges Lavaudant and Sony Labou Tansi. French is her first movie as a lead actress and her talent isn’t going unnoticed, as she has won many best actress awards including at Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival.

The beautiful cinematography was created by Noé Bach, the music composed by Jan Visocky and was edited by Clémence Diard. French was awarded the Oscar-qualifying accolades at New York International Children Film Festival (Jury Award), Palm Springs Short fest (Bridging the Borders Award), and Leuven International film festival in Belgium (Jury Award).

French will screen at Columbia University in New York as part of the Blackness in French Cinema Programme from November 6th to the 16th, and at the Miami Short Film Festival from November 8th to 11th.
