Luke Benward Marks His Directorial Debut with Short Film, BOYS

BOYS shares a story that puts children, parents and guns at the forefront of the conversation


BOYS is Luke Benward’s (LIFE OF THE PARTY) directorial debut. This emotionally-charged story depicts a tale of two young friends playing in the desert when their reality takes a dark turn. Loss of innocence and the dehumanization of elitism ultimately emerge as the short’s central themes. This timely film has qualified to be considered for a 2022 Academy Award.

BOYS stars Cameron Crovetti (Big Little Lies), August Maturo (Girl Meets World), Jules Willcox (Dirty John), Bart Johnson (Little Women), and Scott Reeves (The Young and The Restless).

Synopsis: Two boys let their imagination run wild in a barren desert, but the fun and games come to a shocking halt.

Luke Benward is an American actor, screenwriter, producer, and director. Benward began acting at the age of 5 when he was cast in WE WERE SOLDIERS, starring alongside industry giant Mel Gibson. His childhood was successful as he accumulated a pronounced body of work starring in the New Line Cinema film, HOW TO EAT FRIED WORMS at age 12, to films such as the Netflix Film DUMPLIN’ with Jennifer Aniston and LIFE OF THE PARTY with Melissa McCarthy, as well as a variety of different television credits, many more film credits ranging from studio films to experimental indies and the recent addition of producing credits to his resume and a lengthy screenwriting portfolio.

The young leads have already made quite a mark on the entertainment world. Cameron Crovetti is best known for playing Nicole Kidman’s son in HBO’s BIG LITTLE LIES. He can also be seen in the Emmy nominated Amazon series, THE BOYS. August Maturo is best known for the Emmy Nominated Disney Channel hit series GIRL MEETS WORLD and New Line Cinema’s THE NUN.

Writer David Mandell created the beautiful script and is showcasing his talents with other notable credits including EVERY NOTE PLAYED with Angelina Jolie and Christoph Waltz and the APPLE television series THE BRIDGE.

Producer Ariel Winter is one of Hollywood’s most promising young talents. She began acting at the age of four and has amassed an impressive resume since, including her recent venture into producing. She most notably starred for eleven seasons as Alex Dunphy on ABC’s critically acclaimed and Emmy-winning hit series MODERN FAMILY, and as the voice of Sofia on the hit Disney series SOFIA THE FIRST.

Producer Sterling Beaumon is best known for his role on the critically acclaimed AMC/NETFLIX series THE KILLING. He can be seen more recently in the NBC limited series LAW & ORDER: TRUE CRIME opposite Edie Falco.

Producer Aaron Benward, the father of BOYS director, Luke Benward, and creative entrepreneur, started his career in music and went on to sell over 1 million records and 10 #10 Billboard singles.  Aaron is the founding partner for Watershed Motion Pictured and has produced 3 feature films in the last 3 years.

Producer Nicole Smolen has several award-winning films under her belt, many of which have debuted at acclaimed festivals ranging from Palm Springs and Tribeca to Cannes. These titles include QUERY starring Justice Smith, and Nina Dobrev’s THE ONE.

John Jermansen has produced over 250 episodes of television and feature-length motion pictures. Just some of his work includes The Crucible, Home for the Holidays, What is Love, and Gray Matters.

BOYS is Executive Produced by Andrew Carlberg who was named by Variety as one of “Hollywoodʼs New Leaders.” He was the producer of SKIN, which won the 2019 Academy Award for Live Action Short Film, and FEELING THROUGH, which was nominated for a 2021 Academy Award. BOYS is also Executive Produced by Sy Huq (THINGS THAT FALL), an award-winning Bangladeshi-American filmmaker, and by Mitchell Gossett, who has been in the entertainment industry as an agent/manager for decades and has discovered some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Lawrence. He has represented Luke Benward since he began acting at 5 years old.
