New York, NY – April 21, 2020 – The upcoming experimental narrative short-film, Other States of Matter, completed the sizzle reel post-production. The project is seeking funds and production is expected to begin in late Fall 2020, with an anticipated release date in mid-summer 2021.
“The sizzle reel captures the aesthetic and the essence of the film. We can’t wait to bring the full script to life! It is my hope that this film will be my most ambitious work to date”, said Writer/Director Abigail He. Based on a dream and deeply influenced by psychology, surrealism and abstract expressionism, the story follows Mya, a 14-year-old teenager, who embarks on a dreamlike journey to explore female puberty, growth, and adulthood.
The film aims to raise the public awareness of the female psyche and to explore and preserve the analog handmade cinematic arts, its tools and technologies in the digital age. “I am interested in revealing the unconscious side of women’s mind and to explore the relations between female psyche and puberty, the awakening of sexuality and adulthood. To fully reveal the female psyche and the unconscious world, the expressive use of colors, visual forms and sound will intertwine and transcend the frame to tell the story as well as to incorporate the narrative into an organic body of work.” Abigail He added, “The film will be shot in 16mm color film and will be completed with the analog handmade cinematic techniques, such as celluloid painting and optical printing.”

Abigail He is a NYC based independent filmmaker and visual artist who was born and raised in China. She has been writing and directing short films for the past six years. Before Christmas, written and directed by Abigail, was selected in over 20 film festivals around the world and has won several awards, including the Golden Cine Award at Headline International Film Festival. Her experimental short film FLOW has been broadcasted on PBS. Abigail is now in pre-production of her latest short film Other States of Matter, an experimental film that serves up a dreamlike, nonlinear journey about female puberty, growth, and adulthood through the eyes of a 14-year-old girl.
