South African filmmaker Benjamin Martin, co-founder of Red Bait Pictures, has officially announced the development of his debut narrative feature film, EPHEMERA, with the production targeting a South African theatrical release in 2027.

The announcement marks a significant milestone for both Martin and Red Bait Pictures, introducing the company’s first feature-length production and signaling the beginning of its long-term vision to produce original South African cinema with international reach.

Martin recently graduated from SAE Institute Cape Town, where he was honoured with the institution’s prestigious CEO Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements throughout his academic career and the impact of his work beyond the classroom. While studying, Martin’s films received multiple international festival selections and awards, earning recognition across the independent film circuit and establishing him as one of South Africa’s promising emerging filmmakers. His work has consistently demonstrated a commitment to emotionally driven storytelling, cinematic visual language, and stories that explore the complexities of the human experience.

With a passion for creating films that linger with audiences long after the credits roll, Martin’s storytelling is shaped by recurring themes of memory, identity, grief, obsession, family, ambition, justice, and the search for belonging. Drawing inspiration from grounded human drama while embracing subtle genre elements, his creative approach seeks to blend intimate character studies with ambitious cinematic filmmaking.

United by a shared creative philosophy and a belief in the global potential of South African storytelling, the pair established Red Bait Pictures to develop bold, director-driven narrative films capable of resonating with audiences both locally and internationally.

Although the company is newly established, its ambitions are firmly focused on the future. Red Bait Pictures is committed to producing original films that place emotional authenticity, cinematic craftsmanship, and meaningful storytelling at the heart of every production. The company aims to champion distinctive creative voices while developing stories that can connect with audiences across cultures without losing their South African identity.

The company’s inaugural feature, EPHEMERA, reflects that vision.

Currently in development, EPHEMERA is a grounded science fiction drama exploring memory, grief, identity, and the invisible threads that connect us to one another. Through an intimate and emotionally driven narrative, the film examines how the memories we hold onto shape our present, asking what it truly means to let go while preserving the people and moments that define our lives.

The production is targeting principal photography later this year, with post-production scheduled to conclude in time for a strategic festival campaign ahead of a planned South African theatrical release in 2027. The filmmakers intend to pursue both local and international exhibition opportunities, introducing EPHEMERA to audiences through a carefully considered release strategy that reflects the company’s commitment to independent cinema.

“Red Bait Pictures was created because we believe there is space for South African films that are both deeply personal and universally relatable,” says Martin. “Our goal has never simply been to make films, but to build a body of work that audiences can connect with on an emotional level. EPHEMERA is the first chapter of that journey, and we couldn’t be more excited to begin sharing it.”

As development continues, Red Bait Pictures will release further announcements regarding casting, production milestones, festival plans, and theatrical exhibition. With EPHEMERA, the company hopes to introduce audiences to a distinctive new filmmaking voice while laying the foundation for a long-term slate of original narrative features that celebrate the richness of South African storytelling on a global stage.
