‘Rebel Without a Crew’ Filmmaking by 7K & Scarlet Moreno

indieactivity: How did you qualify for Rebel Without a Crew?
Scarlet Moreno: I submitted a previous short film I directed entitled “Dolores” to El Rey’s TPN network. I didn’t hear anything back about it and figured it was just a tiny chance they would watch it anyway. About 6 months later, I received an email saying they had seen the film and wanted me to apply to be on Rebel Without a Crew. I did so and the rest is history!

indieactivity: What is it like making a feature with 7k?
Scarlet Moreno: It’s difficult and exhilarating. Figuring out how to work around the constraints of a 7K budget is like solving a puzzle every day on set. It’s amazing when it works out!

Scarlet Moreno: ‘I made it on a 10 hour shoot days, shy of 140 hours’

indieactivity: How many hours did you log during shooting?
Scarlet Moreno: I don’t have an exact number, but we shot for 14 days, for about 9 or 10 hour shoot days, so probably just shy of 130-140 hours?

indieactivity: What is it like working with Robert Rodriguez?
Scarlet Moreno: It’s lovely! He was a really amazing mentor and truly cared about our process.

indieactivity: What is the production process like on Rebel Without a Crew?
Scarlet Moreno: It was the most difficult thing I’ve undertaken professionally and also the most fun I’ve ever had professionally.

Scarlet Moreno and Robert Rodriguez on set of Rebel Without a Crew

indieactivity: What is special about Rebel Without a Crew?
Scarlet Moreno: Rebel Without a Crew documents five extremely different filmmakers undertaking the same wild challenge. It’s throwing five people into a uniquely daunting situation and seeing whether they come out of it alive. I think that’s pretty special in and of itself.

indieactivity: What advice did Robert Rodriguez give you?
Scarlet Moreno: Robert taught me to let go and to get out of my own way. It’s a lesson I have had to learn in the broader spectrum of life too, so it’s pretty amazing to have applied it to filmmaking and seen the benefits it gave me.
