Merlisa Determined stars in her new movie titled, She Sexy. In the history of cinema or film, pundits have betted that black romance on the silver screen would be hard to come by. That bet fails in the romantic film “She Sexy” which features a young black lead couple. While it is a movie with a simple plot, its dramatic moments dive into intense, crazy, sexy, fun, and exhilarating moments. The movie is about the love lives of a career-driven movie actress, named Brazil and a complex black writer, named M. Sparks, starring Merlisa Determined and Yohance Miles.
Writer-director Joseph Elmore‘s film followed the highs and lows, of a relationship between a black couple fighting to understand their love. Set in the eclectic city’s high-rise apartment, “She Sexy” showcases a different aspect of black life, one where struggles and strife do not dictate a person’s circumstances. And where a person’s group of friends, played by Flo Peters and Nicole Crump are more like family.

Black love has found its way into current feature films and television shows such as “The Best Man” franchise, “Queen Sugar,” “Southside With You” and “Insecure” to name just a few.
Merlisa says She Sexy Is the kind of film that touches on a different story topic, about an actress and a writer, who takes a chance on romance but finds their ambitions and baggage can keep them from taking their relationship further, because of their mentality, and thought process as intellectuals. The two are not afraid to be vulnerable, to be in love, to face their feelings in a way that they probably hadn’t done ever before in a long. Their love is explosive, intense, crazy, sexy, fun, and exhilarating but exhausting. It is a mature movie yet still capturing the experiences of black love.
“I took on this character looking this way, rocking my natural hair versus silky straight hair to showcase the full beauty of what it is being black wearing my kinky Afro-hair. It is being unapologetically black”, says Merlisa.
Especially in the current political climate, with the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, black people can’t shy away from what they are. I want brown and black girls to see and feel proud of themselves as they watch the movie.
I believe Director Joseph Elmore just wanted two black people that can be identified as being black and beautiful in this movie. It wasn’t meant to be any more than a story about two black people falling in love.
