indieactivity: How did you become an actor?
Mary LeGault (ML): I’ve wanted to be an entertainer for as long as I can remember. After high school, my first role was in 2005, starring in Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” at the El Portal Theatre in Noho. After the show closed, I was hooked. I waited tables at night, hustled for auditions during the day, and worked as a producer, photographer, videographer, model, and basic stunt performer. I stayed around the industry learning as much as I could.

What acting technique do you use?
Mary LeGault (ML): I have studied Meisner and Method acting, it’s important to understand the difference. I’ve gone to several schools for scene study, but I try to create fresh and memorable performances by bringing different elements of myself into an artificial environment. Knowing who you are is key to being a good actor.

Describe the wrong impressions actors hold about acting?
Mary LeGault (ML): Some actors say, “you got to be in the right place, at the right time.” And while networking and luck help, you need to be in the right mindset and be the best human you can be when the time comes. I blew one of my bigger films offers because I wasn’t prepared for that call. Do the work, and always be ready.

What acting books do you read?
Mary LeGault (ML): Some books I have read on acting that I think are worth the read are; “Meisner on Acting” by Sanford Meisner, “ Respect for Acting” by Uta Hagen, and “An Actor Prepares” by Konstantin Stanislavski.

How do you keep fit as an actor: mentally, and physically?
Mary LeGault (ML): My best days include; Morning meditation, yoga, quiet writing/reading time, spending quality time with my little girl, walks with my dogs, and a hot shower before bed. The key is to enjoy life, enjoy your space, & practice deep breathing.

How do you prepare for a role, after you get it?
Mary LeGault (ML): I’ll read a script until I find the character arches, variations, cures, and all moments I can figure out. Then I spend lots of time thinking about the character, thinking through moments, and thinking as the character. Once you get a role, you need to bring “the character” to you.

Explain one creative choice you took on set?
Mary LeGault (ML): On an indie, last year, named Preacher Six I had a scene with Eileen Grubba, who is an incredible actress to work alongside. The scene wasn’t feeling natural during rehearsal. Eileen made the suggestion we improv some of the dialogue. It was an amazingly creative choice, although not mind, it opened the scene up for more interpretation.

What do you want most from a director?
Mary LeGault (ML):
I want clear communication and some freedom to play. Actors can bring a lot more if you let them play, create, and improv.

What actor do you long to work with and why?
Mary LeGault (ML): I have already worked with some great people. I’d love to add to the list Jimmy Carrey, Keanu Reeves, Natalie Portman, Lake Bell, Seth Rogen, Norman Reedus, Kal Penn, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, to name a few. I enjoy working with those who inspire greatness, can become part of the artist process, and live above the distraction of media.

What advice would you give actors around the world?
Mary LeGault (ML):
The advice I give actors is; One, figure out what makes you, you; and bring that to the scene. Don’t try to be anyone else. Two, in this industry you have to set your own value and understand your worth. Do not sacrifice yourself or your morals for any role.

Briefly write about your upcoming projects?
Mary LeGault (ML): I played a small supporting role in “Preacher Six,” an Indie action-thriller coming out this year. In pre-production for a Modern Western with the same production company, Hollywood Magic Productions. If you feeling generous check out the gofundme page for “The Coop,” to support you. In the fall I’ll be working on a comedy with Studio Productions Reborn, titled “Write in Black.
