Yasmin Afifi’s BAFTA nominated JELLYFISH AND LOBSTER is a timeless tale

Los Angeles, CA (January, 30, 2024). Director Yasmin Afifi’s JELLYFISH AND LOBSTER follows Grace (Flo Wilson) and Mido (Sayed Badreya). As they grapple with their inevitable mortality to preserve their youthful past. In an attempt to obtain the ultimate gift of immortality.

A 2023 graduation film from the National Film and Television School (NFTS). We are pleased to announce that this moving short is officially selected for BAFTA. As one of the 5 nominees for Best Live Action Short Film at 2024 BAFTA awards on 18th February. 

Before landing this huge accolade the film was recognized at the British Short Film Awards. There it won three awards, Jury Award, Best British Director and the Best Editing. It also took home the Audience Award at Encounters and Best Short Film at SOUL Fest.

Logline: Grace and Mido are two terminally-ill, elderly residents of a care home. They are grappling with their approaching end of life who make a magical discovery that reinvigorates their sense of youth.

Yasmin Afifi is an award-winning writer/director based in London. Her work has screened at a number of international and BAFTA/BIFA-qualifying festivals including Leeds, Aesthetica, Encounters, New York and LFF. She completed the prestigious Film BA course at the University of Westminster. And went on to complete her MA in Directing Fiction at the National Film and Television School. With funding from a BBC backed scholarship, graduating in March 2023.

Elizabeth Rufai is a recent graduate of the National Film and Television School. And was supported by scholarship funding from the BBC to further her studies on the School’s renowned Producing MA. With previous credits including the animated short THE LAST BISCUIT, and SIRIUS – another collaboration with Afifi. Rufai’s work has screened both nationally and internationally, including BAFTA/BIFA-qualifying festivals.

National treasure Flo Wilson (Grace) has an extensive career in TV and Film. With credits including CORONATION STREET (ITV), THE PETER KAY THING (C4), THE MILL (ITV), Sanditon (ITV/PBS, 2022-23) and most frequently, EMMERDALE (ITV) where she features as ‘Claudette Anderson’. 

Egyptian born Sayed Badreya (Mido) began his career as an assistant to actor/director Anthony Perkins, and then with director James Cameron on the film, TRUE LIES. Creating a production company of his own, ZOOM IN FOCUS, he then directed and produced SAVING EGYPTIAN FILM CLASSICS as well as THE INTERROGATION. Sayed’s extensive acting career has seen him in over 65 movies and television shows including IRON MAN, THE WEST WING and INDEPENDENCE DAY.

This equally emotional and entertaining short has been nominated for a 2024 BAFTA.
