Tribeca selected LGBTQ+ ‘original skin’ directed by award winning Mdhamiri á Nkemi 

Los Angeles, CA (May 2, 2024). Director Mdhamiri á Nkemi’s Original Skin tells the tale of a young woman on a deeply intimate journey of self-discovery, but in doing so defying her community bringing judgement and shame. This meticulously crafted genre film has been selected from over 8000 entries for the prestigious Tribeca Festival in New York.

Synopsis: In an alternate reality where having sex entails switching bodies with the other person, a young woman struggles to truly be herself, challenging her small, traditional community where swapping is taboo.

Director Mdhamiri á Nkemi is a BAFTA Breakthrough and Screen Star of Tomorrow filmmaker. He is a graduate of the National Film and Television School. where he is a recipient of the Most Promising Student Award. As a director, he has multiple features in development, including a feature version of his ambitious award-winning BBC Film short ‘original skin’. He’s interest is in genre films with unconventional and original forms of storytelling, centering around themes of identity and perception.

As an editor, he’s involvement with films that have BAFTA nomination. Academy long listed, and multi-awarded The Last Tree, The Devil’s Harmony, Femme, working alongside filmmakers such as Ridley Scott, Kevin Macdonald and many others. Original Skin has its NY premiere at the Tribeca film festival.

Writer Eve Hedderwick Turner is a London-based writer with TV series, ANNE BOLEYN. Starring Jodi Turner Smith is a production by Fable Pictures, and aired on Channel 5 in 2021. Eve features as one of Deadline’s eight British Writers to watch out for in 2021.

Producer Sabina Smitham is the founder of Hinterland Pictures, a UK-based production company. She collaborates with emerging and established filmmaking talent including Mdhamiri á Nkemi’s original skin for BBC Film and the NFTS. Sabina’s short films have played and won awards at festivals. Including BFI London Film Festival, Palm Springs, and Flickers Rhode Island. Also Clermont Ferrand and Encounters. As well as winning multiple Royal Television Society Awards.

Adam Singodia created the stunning cinematography, constructing an emotionally charged atmosphere of mystery and restraint. 

Original Skin will screen at the Tribeca Festival. On Thursday 6th June at 5:15 pm at the AMC 19th St. East 6. Tuesday 11th June at 8:45 pm at the AMC 19th St. East 6. And Saturday 15th June at 5:45 pm at the AMC 19th St. East 6.
