Los Angeles, Ca (January 17, 2025). After nearly two decades apart, Cristina (Carolina Gutierrez) is finally able to locate her mother, but their long-awaited reunion comes with trepidation as she has to confront the memories of her past. Melissa Fisher’s heart-rending drama Buscando Alma explores the immigrant experience, finding acceptance in your true self and the unconditional love of a parent. The short won the 2024 Jury Award for “Best Drama Short” at Out On Film: Atlanta’s LGBTQ Film Festival thereby qualifying it for the 2025 Oscars®.

Logline: A Honduran immigrant is given the chance to meet her mother after nearly two decades of separation. As she grapples with the uncertainty of their reunion, she is confronted by tumultuous memories of her past.

Melissa Fisher is a Los Angeles based writer and director. She is also a member of the International Cinematographer’s Guild and has worked on Academy and Emmy Award winning films and television series. Melissa went from camera PA on Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain, to camera assist on films like La La Land, to eventually running the camera department on hit television shows like GLOW and The Dropout. Melissa has also directed several short films that have screened in Academy Accredited festivals. She is currently shadowing director Patrick Cady on the new Amazon Prime series Ballard scheduled for release in 2025.

Producer Katie Gunderson is a producer, writer, and actress. You might recognize her from DC’s Doom Patrol with Brendan Fraser, or network favorites like Grey’s Anatomy, Dynasty, and Scandal. She recently wrapped Two Funerals and a Freezer. A film she wrote, produced, and starred in alongside her creative partner, Kai de Mello-Folsom.

Producer Kai de Mello-Folsom has a broad range of experience in production management. His work includes The Voice, Oscars: Red Carpet. And cult Star Trek documentaries For the Love of Spock and What We Left Behind. Recently, he’s produced Disney+ originals like Olivia Rodrigo: Driving Home 2 U and Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return.

Lead actress Carolina Gutierrez is a Bravo award-nominated Los Angeles based actress born in Barranquilla, Colombia. She played the role of Marissa on the TV Show L Word Generation Q. She also played the lead role of Sofia on Amazon Prime’s web series Starlet Diner. A supporting role in the Web Series The Good Samaritans, and the Amazon Prime hit show Goliath. As a proud Latina transgender woman, Carolina has utilized her platform to advocate for trans rights. She has also worked as a producer, model and content creator for various media projects. Including music videos, commercials, and social media campaigns.

This beautiful short has qualified for the 2025 Oscars®.
