I am a multi-genre film Producer. My impressive work spreads across television, digital media and film. I find deep joy in not only completing a project, but also, seeing its profound impact on viewers. This is truly what fuels my work. The first film I produce is a demonic slasher film. The Dead Place is production of Horror Show Pictures. We launched a successful crowdfunding campaign and are moving into the distribution phase.
indieactivity: What’s your experience working on story, screenplay, production and marketing of The Dead Place?
Lania Kayell (LK): I did not contribute to the writing. But, I to the casting our main, supporting, and background talent. We launched two crowdfunding campaigns. I helped with social media marketing, promotions, and outreach. The company already built a strong following on social media. This helped us spread the word and gain support from various platforms. Before this project, I only had experience in casting and some production assistance. I used that and applied organizational skills I learned through other industries.
How did you put the crew and cast together? Did you start writing with a known cast?
Lania Kayell (LK): We already had a strong and talented team. I believe we had certain talent in mind and our director already had connections with most of our main cast. Since we already had some horror legends as part of the cast, agents and potential crew would reach out to us. We are getting a lot of attention and fans thrill to support the film!

What about the script? Did you submit it to any festivals?
Lania Kayell (LK): The Dead Place script was an official selection at Shockfest Film Festival in 2021. This was the only festival that we entered.
When did you form your production company – and what was the original motivation for producing projects?
Lania Kayell (LK): I am currently gaining experience as a producer through production companies. The writer and director’s vision and the overall impact of the story.
What was the first project out of the gate?
Lania Kayell (LK): The Dead Place.
During the film production, what scene (that made the cut) stuck out the most to you and why?
Lania Kayell (LK): I don’t want to give away any spoilers. What I can say is that we were able to have involvement from the fans throughout the filming process. This was important to me because I got my start in this industry through acting. Having the ultimate experience in a film can really make for some great memories.
What worked better in this latest production that mightn’t have worked so well in the last one you did?
Lania Kayell (LK): Every production brings different experiences in which I get an education. I bring certain skills and resources to new projects. I would say that I am more prepared to handle things based on similar challenges from previous projects.

You must have donned several hats on this film, the measure of your input required intellect, effort, tenacity, skill (…you know better)?
Lania Kayell (LK): It is common to wear many hats when producing an indie film. As with other jobs, we learn through experience. There are plenty of online resources that offer training and support. I think being honest from the start about your abilities is important. Having a great attitude and enthusiasm is helpful. There is usually room for growth when the right projects come around. It took me using skills from previous experiences and jobs to fulfill certain tasks.
What about independent filmmaking and the business do you still find challenging?
Lania Kayell (LK): I think joining projects that require more funding can create more of a challenge. There are certain stories and genres that can be more marketable than others. It is important to keep the potential for marketing, creativity, and the business side of things in mind when selecting a project.
Where do you think your strengths lie as a producer?
Lania Kayell (LK): Listening, multi-tasking, networking, persistence, and communications. Looking for ways to save on expenses is always helpful!

Let’s talk about finance. How did you finance the film?
Lania Kayell (LK): Crowdfunding, social media networking, and traditional outreach.
How did you manage budget issues?
Lania Kayell (LK): Our campaign allowed us to continue to receive funds, so we were able to complete the film!
How important is marketing? Do you think a project can make a dent without it nowadays?
Lania Kayell (LK): Extremely important! I think you can expand your reach through all phases of production with marketing. I am learning how beneficial a marketing plan can be during distribution. Social media and hosting events can make a huge difference!
Tell us about marketing activities or efforts on this project – and how it worked or didn’t work?
Lania Kayell (LK): We already had a built-in audience with thousands of followers and a popular podcast. We were creative with our pitch video. Because we knew we had horror legends in the cast, so we got them involved in spreading the word. We followed a theme while using a social media calendar and received press coverage. We also had a street team to hand out flyers and visited horror conventions to promote the film. All these things and more worked out in our favor.
What do you hope audiences will get from the presentation of your film?
Lania Kayell (LK): This film satisfies what horror fans are looking for from slashers. It also sends a message about the tragic story of Isaac Stecker, a young man struggling with the gift of seeing beings that remain hidden from most eyes. Some of the specters that plague Isaac are of an insidious and menacing nature. Unfortunately, Isaac is alienated from his family and is an outcast amongst his peers, most of whom believe that he suffers from psychotic delusions.
What else have you got in the works?
Lania Kayell (LK): I am currently working on another feature film, and this one is a sci-fi/thriller. I am excited to share more updates about this soon!
