Kashif Boothe is an Independent filmmaker under Kashif Boothe Entertainment. His web-series Nate & Jamie won Favorite Web Ensemble at the Screen Nation Awards in 2018. He executive produced, multi award-winning series Talia Versus. And the short film Black Man Stand, which won Best Documentary at the London Short Series Festival 2019.
Kashif has worked successfully on Big Brother, The Elaine Paige Talk Show and Jamie Oliver shows. He has been working in the TV industry for 8 years across factual, scripted and media operations at ITV, Discovery Channel, Channel 4, Green Door Pictures (Idris Elba’s), and Reggie Yates.
indieactivity: Give a background of your experience with story, writing, production and marketing?
Kashif Boothe (KB): I don’t have a personal experience with the story, it comes from my imagination. The pilot episode of Nate & Jamie is based on a story by Joshua Samuels who plays Jamie in my web series Nate & Jamie and I developed the characters and storyline from it.

Did you start writing with a cast (You or any) in mind?
Kashif Boothe (KB): Yes I did as the show was going to star the actor who inspired the show.
How long did you take to complete the script? (Do you have a writing process?)
Kashif Boothe (KB): 6 months.
When did you form your production company – and what was the original motivation for its formation?
Kashif Boothe (KB): I formed the production company in 2016 and my original motivation, which is still the motivation to this day, is to inform, educate, entertain and inspire.
What was the first project out of the gate?
Kashif Boothe (KB): I produced a comedy sketch about a girl on a date with her egotistical boyfriend.
During production, what scene (that made the cut) was the hardest to shoot?
KB: The club scene in Season 2 episode 1, was the hardest to shoot because an actor dropped out the day before the shoot. The day we were filming it was extremely hot and we couldn’t have the air con on or windows open, that made everyone extremely annoyed and agitated.
What works better in this latest production that mightn’t have worked so well in the last one you did?
KB: The picture quality works well as we were able to shoot in 4K on SONY AS 7 Mark ii cameras.
You produced and directed the film, what measure of input did it take to don these hats?
KB: I wrote, produced and directed the first season of Nate & Jamie, but in Season 2 I wrote and produced it and brought on great directors Yazz Anderson – Moore and Troy Aidoo.
Is there anything about the independent filmmaking business you still struggle with?
KB: The biggest thing I struggle with is funding. All of my projects have been self-funded and I’m now looking for investors and funding schemes to help fund my next project.
Where do you think your strengths lie as a filmmaker?
KB: Writing and Producing.
Let’s talk about finance. How did you finance the film?
KB: I self funded the web series from my savings and wages.
How much did you go over budget? How did you manage it?
KB: I was lucky I didn’t go over budget.
How important is marketing? Do you think a project can make any dent without it these days?
KB: Marketing is essential to any production, without it a project will not succeed.
Can you tell us about your marketing activities on the project – and how it’s gone for you?
KB: I worked with a social media manager and I sent out hundreds of press releases to blogs promote the series.
What do you hope audiences get from your film?
KB: I hope audiences find the stories relatable and funny.
What else have you got in the works?
KB: I am development of Season 2 of my web series Imperfect and another web series which is a 2nd spinoff to Nate & Jamie.
