The topic of Casino – Topics Movie Makers Love

An MI6 agent going on thrilling espionage adventures around the world: Who comes to mind? For most people, this immediately spells out 007, James Bond. As one of the most popular movie franchises of all time. The series was originally adapted from novels and short story collections by Ian Fleming.

This series is one among the list of action movies that use a casino venue as the movie’s main setting. With other examples including the Ocean’s series and standalone movies such as 21 in 2008. Casinos have long been a favorite for film screenwriters to use as a setting around captivating casino table games. Mainly due to the thrill of the games that went on in the venue. How easy it is for screenwriters to write in an action or heist sequence involving the setting.

In the James Bond movie series, for example, the casino setting has made multiple appearances with varying degrees. The character is written as one of the best poker players in MI6. Which explains why he’s often involved in cases that have to do with casino venues.

While there have been multiple James Bond movies with cases that involve a casino. Casino Royale is the most well-known title. With the poker game, Texas Hold ‘em, as the center of the plot. It artfully integrates the thrill of the high-stakes game tournament with an intricate storyline of espionage. With a fine balance of action and storytelling from the beginning of the movie all the way to the end.

Biopics – Topics Movie Makers Love

In recent years, biopic or biographical movies have started to rise in popularity. For example, one of Hollywood’s biggest box office in 2023, Oppenheimer, is a biopic film taken from J. Robert Oppenheimer’s story of developing nuclear weapons for the US.

When it comes to making a biopic film, the aspect of storytelling becomes an integral part of the process. Biopics are often adapted from existing biographies or non-fiction books, while fans of book adaptation movies are all too familiar with how different it is to watch a movie from reading a novel.

Oppenheimer, for example, is a 3-hour long biographical movie that could have been snooze-inducing without correct pacing and a little bit of dramatization to make it more enticing to the audience. Christoper Nolan, the movie director, is well-known for crafting complex storylines, made apparent through his long line of blockbuster movies with mind-boggling endings such as The Prestige and Interstellar.

Video games – Topics Movie Makers Love

The topic of video games, either as a central plot to a movie or a video game’s plot taken to be adapted into a movie, is not new in Hollywood. The earlier ones were written and screened in the early 2000s and are still familiar in the movie scene to this day, such as the Resident Evil and the Tomb Raider series.

Video game movies have truly become a hit mainly in the past decade. In 2023 alone, two video game movies have made it into the list of highest-grossing movies of the year – The Super Mario Bros Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Adaptation movies can be a hit or miss, so moviemakers have to take into account that they’re writing for big fans of the game. Accurate characterization and plot points need to be taken seriously, as seen in the example of the Silent Hill series, which received criticism from fans for not taking characterization seriously.

Science and futuristic topics – Topics Movie Makers Love

While biographical movies deal with the past, some movies prefer to talk about the “what-if”s of the future. Contrary to what moviegoers may believe, science fiction has been a genre from as far back as the 1920s, with the title Metropolis made by Fritz Lang. It became an influential movie that inspired multiple artworks, from music to film characters.

The word “science fiction” may evoke something similar to Star Wars or Star Trek, an adventure in a faraway land with fantastical technology and creatures that don’t exist on Planet Earth. However, the genre itself can be much more broad than that.

For example, people may identify the 2023 movie M3GAN as merely a horror movie, but it does touch the topic of science fiction and technology, albeit in a different way than George Lucas did with Star Wars or Gene Roddenberry did with the Star Trek series. By taking an automated doll that involves a recently developed technology and adding a horror twist by making it have a mind of its own that becomes possessive, the movie writer took the known tropes in science fiction and made something new and exciting for the audience.
