My name is Karen Broadway-Wilson. I have been writing for over twenty years, starting with stage plays. I have had the honor of producing shows at the Apollo Theater and Caroline’s on Broadway, and performing throughout the United States, Africa and the Caribbean Islands. My latest project is my feature film, Tried by Fire, set in the upscale suburb of Upper Listen. It follows Pastor Mia Inglewood. A former police chief turned trailblazing pastor, as she empowers her community and confronts deep-rooted inequality. When tragedy strikes, her strength and faith are tested and Tried by Fire.

Cast: Mia Inglewood – Shenetta Malkia, Mama Angie – Vera Moore, Criston Andell – Lenny, Sister Melba – Melba Moore (Guest Star), Geoff Burte – Jerry Manon and Frank Muni – James Manon

What is your experience working on the story, screenplay, production, premiere, and Marketing?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
I began developing the story during the pandemic. I had my script reviewed by industry professionals and collaborated with other filmmakers and producers. I also joined online training sessions to sharpen my skills. For marketing, I partnered with a team to manage social media and built on the audience I had developed through my theater work. Since this was my first film, I was learning while doing every step of the way.

How did you put the crew and cast together? Did you start writing with a known cast?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
I did not write with a cast in mind, but I had a clear vision for each character’s personality. When auditions began, it was easy to recognize the right fit for each role.

What and how long did it take to complete the script?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
I wrote the script solo in about three to four weeks.

When did you form your production company – and what motivated you?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
I founded BroadWil Films during the pandemic. Writing became a source of light for me during a dark time, and that inspiration led to the birth of both my company and Tried by Fire.

What was the first project out of the gate?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW): Tried by Fire
.

During the film production, what scene was the hardest to shoot and why?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
The hardest scene was when Mia watches her family’s legacy go up in flames—it was deeply emotional for everyone on set.

What worked better in this production than previous ones?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
This was my first film project, so everything was new, but I learned what works through experience.

You must have worn several hats in this film. What did it take to balance it all?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
It took sacrifice, late nights, humility, and a willingness to ask questions. Being teachable and open to feedback made all the difference.

What about independent filmmaking and the business do you still struggle with?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
Financing. My vision is often bigger than my budget—but I remain hopeful!

How did you finance the film?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
Through personal funds, family support, and a few sponsors.

How much did you go over budget, and how did you handle it?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
About $1,000 over. I adjusted by cutting extras and focusing on the essentials.

How important is marketing today?
Karen Broadway-Wilson (KBW):
Marketing is essential. Even the best story will not reach people if they do not know it exists. Visibility is everything.

What were your marketing efforts for this project?
KBW:
I engaged my cast to promote the film, hired social media help, and tapped into my faith-based networks. I am still growing my presence on digital platforms.

What do you hope audiences take away from your film?
KBW:
I hope viewers feel inspired to overcome obstacles, pursue purpose, and become changemakers in their own communities.

What else are you working on?
KBW:
I am currently developing a new stage play and working on Tried by Fire 2.
